Kirsten Dunst’s latest film The Two Faces of January is a gorgeous-looking movie set in the early ’60s in Greece, with an impressive backdrop and beautiful style. When we saw the trailer, we got in touch with make-up designer, Daniel Philips, who worked on the film. Here’s what he told us:
The early ’60s fashion in The Two Faces Of January – which I saw last week – has inspired me to hit up vintage stores ASAP. And that’s not all – I’m also feeling super inspired by the beauty looks too. From the flicked out hair styled under a head scarf, to a slick of dark mysterious eyeliner, make-up designer Daniel Philips took his inspiration for Kirsten’s look from late ’50s Hollywood matinée idols like Kim Novak and Sandra Dee. He told me:
“They seemed to epitomise the new youthful glamour look that was leading the way in the early ’60s. My goal was to create a heightened reality to the looks to portray the glamour of the women and the men, but also to keep it within the realms of the story and not allow the make-up and hair to detract from the plot.”
On set, Daniel’s kit was filled with Dr Hauschka skincare and a mixture of Chanel and Bobbi Brown make-up. He told me that the look he created was very much eye-focused, with the rest of the face left natural:
“Aim to achieve a softly blended full arched eyebrow shape which tapers off at the end for a feline effect – this gives a sexy sultry shape to the eye. Then apply jet black eyeliner in a beautiful sweeping horizontal ‘s’ shape – ending with a flick at the end.”
